Due to the continuing spread of a deadly fish virus, viral hemorrhagic
septicemia, please take great care when fishing from Runyan Lake. This
disease is most recently responsible for the large die-off of black crappie,
bluegill, and muskellunge on 175 acre Budd Lake in Clare County. The DNR is
concerned about further inland lake spread of this disease.
Viral
hemorrhagic septicemia is a fast moving disease causing infected fish to
appear listless, swim in circles, or hang just below the surface. The disease
is harmless to humans and is believed to be another exotic species/disease
brought to our region from ships entering the Great Lakes.

Do not
to release fish caught from another lake into Runyan Lake. Also, baitfish and
fish eggs are sources of this disease, so do not release bait fish obtained
outside of our immediate area into Runyan Lake. Especially do not release
bait fish you have obtained while vacationing up north or those obtained near
Lake St. Clair, Erie, Huron, or Ontario, into Runyan Lake.
These
preventative measures will help protect the good fishing currently offered by
Runyan Lake.
